Sales of the Final Fantasy series exceed 195 million copies sold globally.

In a recent post by MauroNL3 on X, it was mentioned that the Final Fantasy series has sold over 195 million copies worldwide. Sales of the series have increased by 10 million copies since September 30, 2023. While this information has not been officially announced by Square Enix, it can be found in the “About Square Enix, Inc.” message typically included in press releases and on company or game-related websites.

In addition to the increase in Final Fantasy sales, it appears that the sales figure for the Dragon Quest game has also changed. Dragon Quest has now sold more than 91 million copies worldwide, increasing its total sales by 3 million copies as of September 30, 2023. While these numbers may not be exactly what Square Enix desires, it is still a respectable figure.

Square Enix has released several great titles recently, including the Pixel Remasters collection, which includes Final Fantasy 1-6 in one package, as well as finally moving Final Fantasy 16 to PC, which has significantly boosted sales. However, Square Enix has expressed disappointment in their financial reports as the games are still not selling as well as they would like.

According to their latest financial report, the performance of both Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was extremely weak compared to previous Final Fantasy games, prompting them to make a significant change by working on releasing future games on multiple platforms rather than keeping them exclusive to PlayStation. Rumors have been circulating for a long time that they are working on bringing the latest Final Fantasy games to Xbox. Even Yoshi-P commented on this, telling Xbox users not to lose hope.

While Square Enix’s primary focus is Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest has also been a key title for them. The first installment of the series was in 1986, and the latest release was Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, which was released in December 2023. However, compared to other games in the series, the performance of this game was not as good as it could have been, receiving relatively mixed reviews. Despite its underperformance, it managed to sell a million copies by January 2024.

Games like Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Builders 2 continue to perform well, but it is uncertain if there are any Dragon Quest games currently in development, as Square Enix seems to be focusing on a new strong business plan that includes expanding Final Fantasy to platforms other than just PlayStation 5.
