Easy Steps to Update the BIOS on a Laptop to the Latest Version
Updating the BIOS is not a difficult task, especially if you want to do it on a laptop, where all you need to do is access the BIOS update file and install it so that the device does everything after that. However, many people do not know how to get this file, so there are two methods that we will discuss below to update the BIOS in any laptop. But before we start delving into the explanation, there are several things you should consider, such as not running any programs and ensuring that the device’s temperature is not high, and also connecting the charger to the laptop so that the device does not turn off during the update process. If any error occurs during the update process, it will lead to many problems in the laptop. And now, let’s start the review.
Applying the following steps will be at your own risk, as any errors that occur during the application may lead to damage to your laptop.
The first method
The first and safest method is to obtain the update file from the manufacturer of your laptop to ensure that you have the latest official update. You can do this by going to the manufacturer’s support page, and if you do not know how to access it, simply type the company name in Google and write “Support” next to it, such as HP Support, Dell Support, etc., and click on the first search result. After accessing the support page, you will find a box to select the laptop’s name and model. If you don’t know either of them, you can refer to the article “3 programs to know your computer’s specifications.” After identifying them and accessing the laptop’s support page, we move on to the second step.
After that, look for the “Download Driver” section to download the drivers for your laptop. Note that there is a section to select the type of driver you want, so choose BIOS, and if it is not available, search among the available drivers for BIOS and click on the download link to download the BIOS update file to the device.
The second method
The second method to obtain the BIOS update file is to determine the version of BIOS on your device. There are several ways to find this on a Windows system, but the easiest way is to press the Windows logo and the letter R on the keyboard to display the Run window. Type “msinfo32” in it and press Enter. A window will appear containing information about your device. All we need from it is the “BIOS Version/Date” where the BIOS version is displayed, as shown in the image above. Below it in red is what we need to copy and search for it on Google on the internet. There will be results, some of which are official from the manufacturer, and some are results from external websites. Each of the results contains a link to download the BIOS update file that you can download to your device without any problems.
After downloading the BIOS update file using any of the methods outlined above, double-click on the setup file, which is typically an exe file, then click on Yes and start installing the file in the usual way when installing any program.
Once the installation is complete, a window like the one shown in the image above will appear. Leave it until it automatically registers the data under the Current BIOS and New BIOS columns. It will ask you to plug the charger into the device before the word “Initialization” appears on the right side, and then it will reboot the laptop and start installing the new update. On some devices, and perhaps your device is one of them, you will notice that the cooling fan’s noise becomes louder. Do not worry about this as the computer at that moment needs proper ventilation to prevent the device’s temperature from exceeding the allowable limit. After completing the update, the device will boot into the operating system directly, and thus the BIOS has been updated to the latest version.
