10 New Scary Movies to be Broadcast on Shudder Tonight
Halloween is approaching, have you watched enough horror movies? If not, and you’re in the mood for something new, look no further than Shudder. While this streaming service has a massive library of old favorites and classics, it is also full of titles released in 2024. Here are 10 of them to check out for maximum horror.
The Hush
Don’t sleep on The Hush, a film guaranteed to interfere with your sleep from the moment you experience it. The Irish film, written and directed by Damien McCarthy, follows Darcy (Caroline Bracken), a blind woman determined to uncover the truth about the murder of her twin sister. The eerie setting of a psychiatric hospital and an old isolated house provide scream-worthy atmospheres, but Bracken’s performance and the fact that Darcy owns a store full of cursed items – and isn’t afraid to use them! The Hush uniquely combines the most gruesome elements.
Madness
David Moro’s Madness presents evidence that there is always a way to make the zombie genre feel fresh again. This French release follows a group of friends experiencing the early stages of a mysterious disease… in a film that feels like it unfolds in a continuous, tense and thrilling shot.
Late Night with the Devil
Although this old-school sleeper film starring David Dastmalchian as Faust the talk show host was re-aired in March, it is actually set during Halloween, making it the perfect choice to watch this weekend. This is what Mr. Regalz wants you to do!
The Fifth/Hour/Second/Afterwards
The long-lost found footage series focuses heavily on sci-fi in this latest release, but there is still plenty of visceral horror – The Fifth/Hour/Second specializes – to explore here. The stunning final minutes of Kate Siegel’s tale of the strange body “Stowaway” are living rent-free in our heads now, and we both love and hate it for that.
Into the Wild
We weren’t entirely sold on the “killer’s perspective” experiment, but the blood was great – and Into the Wild’s ability to say something new about one of horror’s most famous sub-genres makes it terrific nevertheless. It’s certainly the only movie out there that praises both Terence Malik and Jason Voorhees.
Motionless
When her mother falls ill – a famous animator – Ella (Isling Francissey) finally becomes free to pursue her animation career. But creativity comes at a price, especially when it is imbued with a myriad of complex emotions. Ella’s motionless world soon transitions into reality, allowing Motionless to excellently blend live action and animation elements as it draws out its details.
Destroy All Neighbors
A “love letter to rock music featuring a headless protagonist” may not describe everything about Destroy All Neighbors, but it’s a good start – and we ensure you’ll have a fun time streaming this horror comedy about a frustrated musician going through hell (not literally, but close) to achieve his dreams.
Azrael
In a post-apocalyptic world, demons roam the earth – setting the stage for a grand fantasy adventure filled with FX, but instead, Azrael is designed to be a thrilling survival movie, where Samara Weaving silently fights for her life in a forest filled with human horrors and others.
Devil’s Bath
The latest from Veronique Franz and Severin Fiala, the filmmaking duo behind Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge, draws inspiration from actual historical records. Set in Austria in 1750, the film revolves around a devout woman trapped in an extremely unsatisfactory life, who sees a heinous act of violence as the only way to escape. It’s a dark tale, but a brilliant one. The cinematography won an award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival.
Devil’s Disorder
Former special effects artist turned director Steven Boyle leads this harrowing Australian film about three siblings dealing with extremely unfinished business regarding their father, who may be dead but still looms large in their lives. Boyle’s FX background means that blood gets special attention, and it’s certainly unforgettable in a heartbreaking way.
