Yes, Mattel is really striving to produce a View-Master movie

It’s no secret that Mattel laughed all the way to the bank last year thanks to the massive success at the box office of the director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie. While some of its success can be attributed to the cinematic phenomenon known as the Barbiehammer, Mattel – like any self-respecting company that sees no limit to potential financial success in rehashing a previous idea – quickly went back to work trying to figure out the game they wanted. It turns out it’s the next movie. And here they finally have their answer: View-Master. No, we’re not kidding.

According to Variety, Mattel is officially working on a live-action movie based on its iconic 3D stereoscopic toy from the 1940s in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Escape Artists (the folks behind this toy). The Equalizer 3 and the long-awaited live-action movie for Mattel Masters of the Universe film on Amazon). Typically, this is where we would write about the directors, writers, and prominent actors tasked with bringing this pricey movie ad to life, but there’s nothing to report yet. It’s just View-Master. As ever.

However, the lack of star-studded names attached to the current View-Master film didn’t hinder the excitement of Mattel Films president Robbie Brenner and Escape Artist producer Todd Black.

Brenner said, “View-Master has inspired generations to embark on limitless adventures, providing a treasure trove of storytelling possibilities for this film.” “We are excited to be partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists’ Todd Black to breathe new life into this Mattel franchise. Their creative expertise and filmmaking craft pave the way for delivering a modern take on this beloved toy to audiences everywhere.

“View-Master has always served as a window to the wonders of the world, sparking the imagination of children and adults alike,” echoed Black. “Collaborating with Robbie Brenner and Mattel Films gives us the opportunity to honor this legacy by creating an entirely new adventure for today’s audience. We can’t wait to bring the sense of exploration that this cherished toy embodies to the big screen.

Although the View-Master film is not the most enticing title to be announced before New York Comic Con, Mattel has other projects in the pipeline that are more exciting and have names attached to them. Among them are the Hot Wheels movie with director JJ Abrams; a live-action Barney film starring N and directed aniel Kaluuya; the Rock ‘Em Sock’Em Robots movie with Vin Diesel; and an “action heist film” inspired by Uno featuring rapper Lil Yachty.

For Mattel, we hope any mix of these diverse projects will bring in just as many dollars as Barbie did. Who do you think should star in the View-Master movie?
