Tumblr and WordPress, the popular blogging platforms, are set to sell user data to train artificial intelligence models, including OpenAI and Midjourney models.
On February 19, 2024, it was revealed that Reddit was willing to sell user data to an unknown artificial intelligence company as a means to improve its models. Users quickly revolted against the news on social media, and after a few days, it was uncovered that the company they were selling to was Google.
According to a report by 404Media, it is expected that Tumblr and WordPress will do the same, partnering with OpenAI and Midjourney for this purpose.
In the report, 404Media states that they spoke to a source with insider knowledge of the deals and also saw internal documents indicating it.
The specific types of data being sold are unclear, but the post believes that Automattic (the parent company of Tumblr and WordPress) is about to make a deal with two major players in the artificial intelligence field.
OpenAI and Midjourney are the two companies that Tumblr and WordPress are supposed to sell user data to, with OpenAI working on ChatGPT and Midjourney working on image processing.
It is unknown when these deals will be announced, but 404Media says Automattic plans to release settings on both platforms that allow users to opt out of sharing their content.
