Why I didn’t purchase a WD My Cloud device or any other Cloud device
In the beginning, I have plenty of hard drives at home, but with capacities ranging from 500GB to 1TB. What I need is a large capacity hard drive, such as a 2TB, for storing and transferring files from the hard drive I currently use. Therefore, what I want is an external hard drive that I can connect as needed for storage only and not directly connected to the computer. However, after looking into home Cloud devices, particularly WD My Cloud and also the Iomega StorCenter ix2 device, I began seriously considering buying it because I can connect it to the router and transfer files between all devices in the house and access the files as well, which is very convenient. However..
The device contains one or more HDDs, a processor, and modest RAM, acting as a server. The issue lies with the HDD or HDDs, as the slow speed of HDDs is well-known, especially when using them on the internal network via Wi-Fi! The transfer speed will be extremely slow, similar to transferring files via the network in your home between devices, and even worse.
Furthermore, if you use the USB port on the device to connect it directly to your computer, for example, it will also be slow, as it’s like connecting an HDD via a USB conversion cable, resulting in slow speed in all cases.
Clarification: How to convert any internal hard drive to an external hard drive for $10
Certainly, I have analyzed the situation in the paragraphs above without actually testing the device. Do you think things will be different? Certainly not, because these analyses are logical and convincing, and thus, while the idea of the device is good, the execution is poor as performance was not taken into consideration. Using an HDD with a relatively high price for the device makes it not worth purchasing. As for the idea of the device, let me tell you in a future post how I managed to get the idea of the device without buying it and with higher transfer speed.
