When Do Samsung Phones Stop Receiving New Updates?
Regardless of the type of phone you have and the operating system it runs on, it will continue to receive updates – at the software level, of course – until a certain time and then the process will stop. We have previously explained how to find out when the phone will stop receiving new updates. As for Samsung phones, which are the focus of our discussion today, there is no doubt that the Galaxy S24 lineup, unveiled a few days ago, will enjoy the longest period of updates compared to older Samsung phones. However, the question here is: “Until when”? Or “To what extent”? Most Android phones do not have the same long lifespan as iPhones when it comes to support duration. However, recently, Samsung has been collaborating with Google tirelessly to change this typical image. As evidence of this, let’s take a look at a map of Samsung phone updates.
Years of Samsung Galaxy Phone Updates
First: Samsung Phone Update Policy
Every smartphone manufacturer operating on the Android system has a clear policy regarding major updates to the operating system. Specifically speaking about Samsung, in 2021 the Korean company announced that all phones manufactured from 2019 onwards will receive at least 3 major updates and 4 years of security updates for the Android system. This is why support for phones like the Galaxy S10, which has been around since February 2019, has stopped. Samsung went on in March of the previous year and announced an extension of updates for most of its phones, including foldable phones, for up to 5 years. Based on this statement, owners of Samsung phones can now ensure 5 years of major Android updates and 4 years of phone support with security updates. We are not talking about flagship phones here, but about mid-range devices, such as Galaxy A devices, Samsung tablets, and others. Fortunately, Samsung provides a list of its devices and the duration of their update support, which you can check.
It is worth noting that new Galaxy A models like the Galaxy A54 5G will receive Android updates for the next five years, and Samsung may surprise us with an additional year or two for the A series in the future, as the Korean company evolves in this regard and does its best to enhance the operating system of its beloved phones.
