WhatsApp launches new feature to save contacts within the app

WhatsApp has announced a new feature that allows users to easily save contacts within the app. The importance of this feature lies in providing a way to save all contacts within the app, making them available through cloud storage, even in case of phone loss or when connecting a new device to the primary number.

Previously, WhatsApp relied on the numbers stored in the phone to sync the contacts used in the app. When messaging a new person and wanting to save their information, that data was stored locally on the phone and not in the app itself.

The new feature allows users to save contacts directly within the app and sync them across all devices, including WhatsApp Web, Windows app, and Mac app. Users can also choose to sync saved contacts within the app with the phone as well.

WhatsApp started last year allowing users to log into two different accounts using one device, making it easier to separate personal contacts from work contacts. Additionally, if the device is used by more than one person, this feature helps maintain a list of personal contacts linked to the specific number.

To ensure contacts are securely saved, WhatsApp has developed a new encrypted storage system called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS). When saving a contact, the system creates an encryption key on the device, which is retrieved based on the device’s identity authentication process.

WhatsApp has also collaborated with the cybersecurity company Cloudflare to monitor any changes in the encryption properties of user data. According to Meta, this partnership aims to ensure that contacts are not modified without the user’s knowledge.

Interestingly, the new technology will allow saving contacts using usernames instead of phone numbers, providing an additional layer of privacy. The platform has confirmed in a post on its official blog that using usernames will exempt the user from the need to share their phone number when messaging someone.
