Ubisoft responds to report of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown development team disbanding

Yesterday, a report emerged stating that Ubisoft had laid off the entire team behind Prince of Persia The Lost Crown due to poor sales, even rejecting the idea of developing a sequel to the game.

Following the spread of this news, Ubisoft responded to the report about the fate of the development team of Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. This came through a statement sent by the French company to Eurogamer, confirming much of what was mentioned in the report – although they clarified that the game’s team is still present and busy at the Ubisoft Montpellier development studio, working on other projects that will benefit from their expertise.

The Eurogamer report was not entirely clear yesterday about the fate of the team members behind The Lost Crown – which received positive feedback from critics upon its release this year, despite failing to achieve significant success. The report also indicated that The Lost Crown will not receive a sequel due to its commercial performance – a fact that Ubisoft did not deny today – stating that ideas for the sequel have been integrated into the game’s downloadable content (DLC) plans.

Abdulhaq Al-Qais, the lead producer of the game Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, said:

“I am extremely proud of our team’s work and passion at Ubisoft Montpellier to create a game that resonated with players and critics alike, and I am confident in its long-term success. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is now at the post-launch roadmap with three free content updates and one downloadable content update released in September. We are now focusing on making the game available to more players: it was recently launched on Steam, and will be available on Mac by this winter.”

“Most of the team members who worked on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown have moved to other projects that will benefit from their expertise. We know that players love this franchise, and Ubisoft is excited to deliver more ‘Prince of Persia’ experiences in the future.”

One of these projects is, of course, the long-awaited remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time from Ubisoft, scheduled for release in 2026 – about six years after its initial reveal.

It is unclear which projects at Ubisoft Montpellier the team behind The Lost Crown has joined, although the studio is still working on the highly anticipated game Beyond Good & Evil 2 from Ubisoft.
