Uber explores buying Expedia to enhance its travel booking services.

Uber is considering the possibility of acquiring Expedia, one of the largest travel booking companies in the world, according to a report from the Financial Times. The market value of Expedia is estimated at around twenty billion dollars, with its highest revenues recorded in 2023. If the deal goes through, it would be the largest in Uber’s history.

So far, Uber has not made an official offer, as they are still evaluating the financial and operational aspects of the deal with the help of specialized advisors.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi may avoid participating in the negotiations as he was the former CEO of Expedia and still serves on its board of directors. The report suggests that the idea for the deal came from a third party, adding further complexity to the matter.

Uber has been looking to expand its presence in the travel booking sector, adding services for train, bus, and flight reservations in some markets. The company previously acquired food delivery company Postmates and purchased Careem in 2019 for three billion and one million dollars, reflecting Uber’s ambitious strategy to expand into new sectors.
