The Processor Your Mobile Phone Needs: The New Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus

Qualcomm has unveiled the mid-year refresh of the Snapdragon 888 processor, a chip that has been leaked and rumored for months but is now officially introduced as the Snapdragon 888 Plus. Just like previous generations, Qualcomm typically makes significant changes to its next-gen processor in December, so we weren’t expecting a revolution with the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G. However, some minor changes have been made to improve raw performance and AI capabilities, which will be available in the second half of 2021.

The new Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G processor is essentially the same as the old Snapdragon 888 with two main differences. The first is that the CPU clock speed has been increased, making it more powerful. The Kryo 680 cores now operate at 3GHz instead of 2.84GHz, resulting in higher overall processor performance. The second is that the Hexagon chip has also been improved, making the processor more efficient and powerful when it comes to processing AI code.

The Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G also comes with a modem that allows for download speeds of up to 7.5Gbps on compatible networks, and up to 3Gbps in the same conditions. It continues to support the latest generation of fast charging technology, Quick Charge 5.0, enabling charging speeds of up to 100 watts with the latest industry standards.

Like the Snapdragon 888, the updated version uses the Snapdragon X60 5G RF modem system and FastConnect 6900 technology, along with the Spectra 580 image processor ISP – which allows for capturing 4K triple video or 28-megapixel photos.
