The latest NYCC trailer for Lower Decks serves as a reality check

The final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is almost upon us, and the show is pulling out all the stops in its last lap. It’s always a given that USS Cerritos and its crew will pull off some tricks, because that’s what they do. But Star Trek is preparing a Universe panel at New York Comic-Con with some strange fun in the form of interdimensional travel.

While Boimler (Tawny Newsome) and Ransom (Jack Quaid) have to do some light time-travel to last year’s direct event with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks is bringing the entire cast on this journey this time. As they investigate a quantum split in space – one of many splits that have recently appeared, according to Boimler and Tendi – the ship is pulled and detonated on the other side into another dimension. Making matters more complicated, Cerritos is contacted by… Cerritos, led by Mariner, or rather Beckett Freeman.

Alternative facts are nothing new in Star Trek, but Lower Decks has not delved into them before. Beyond the shock of seeing Mariner in the captain’s chair, this other Cerritos features the crew with some main crew members with some interestingly new looks, like Boimler with a Riker-esque beard and Rutherford with more mechanical body parts. And since this is the finale of the show’s journey, it will be interesting to see how the main Lower Decks crew members react to seeing these new versions of themselves as they take on more responsibilities and boldly go to new places in life.

The first episode of the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres next Thursday, October 24.
