The Difference Between the Abbreviations That Appear on Your Phone Screen: +H, E, 3G, H, +H, 4G, 4G

In our continuous interaction with our phones, especially browsing the internet through them, you may have noticed the symbols mentioned in the title on the top bar of your phone screen. Most of us are aware or have noticed that each abbreviation signifies a certain speed. For example, most of us have noticed that G indicates very slow internet speed, E is slightly faster, but still slow, while 3G gives a sense of comfort when browsing the internet. Let’s take a closer look at what these abbreviations actually mean, the differences between them, why they constantly change, and when it is preferable to use 3G technology. All of this will be explained in this post, God willing.

The distinguished blogger Amr Mohamed previously explained the meanings of internet connection network symbols and their types, but I want to explain them again due to their importance, adding some other important abbreviations and providing more clarification.

G
This is the first generation of communication technologies, abbreviated as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). It is the oldest of these symbols and relies on the weakest communication technologies (first generation). It uses the GPRS technology that utilizes GSM networks, which stands for Global System for Mobile communications. This symbol indicates that the speed ranges between 56 – 114 Kbps, which is, of course, very slow, with its only advantage being that it works on all types of phones.

E
It stands for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), which in turn indicates that it is slightly faster than G, with speeds reaching up to 380 Kbps. This allows users to enjoy relatively smooth browsing, but may not have the capability to play videos.

3G
This means that the user is enjoying third-generation technologies, relying on the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). It is better than the previous symbols, widely used and suitable for many, as its speed reaches up to 6 Mbps, which is considered good to some extent but may still be unsuitable for others.

H
It indicates that the user is on 3.5G technology. When you see this symbol, you can rest assured about your internet speed, as it signifies HSPA (High Speed Packet Access), with speeds reaching up to 14 Mbps, also known as +3G.

H+
This abbreviation stands for HSPA+ or Dual-Cell High Speed Packet Access +, meaning you are experiencing speeds of up to 42 Mbps, which is very good. You can send and receive anything at any time without worrying about losing connection or network slowdown, also known as DC.

4G
We are here talking about the highest technologies so far, the fourth-generation technology known as LTE (Long Term Evolution), with speeds of 150 Mbps. Just imagine browsing the internet on your phone at this speed – it’s truly wonderful.

4G+
There are few individuals who have enjoyed this technology as it has not yet spread worldwide. It stands for Long Term Evolution Advanced, with speeds of 1 Gbps, meaning you can watch a full movie in 1080p without any issues.

These abbreviations change as a result of changing your location or network coverage strength, and the efficiency of capturing the network from the nearest phone tower. You cannot control this unless you change your location. If you have the weakest internet abbreviation while you are in the best coverage area or if someone else nearby with similar coverage conditions has better service with a higher abbreviation, restart your phone to reconnect to the network or set it to airplane mode for at least 30 seconds or a minute, then switch back to normal mode or go to the phone settings and network modes to select the correct mode.

Another tip is, if you are going to use the internet, turn on the highest technology, whether it’s 3G or 4G. If you are not connected to the internet or do not need it at the moment, switch to the lowest option like 2G to save your battery. In this case, you do not need high technology for voice calls.
