Tesla launches self-driving CyberCab car in a step towards the future of smart transportation.
The new Tesla CyberCab, designed specifically for passenger transportation, was revealed by Tesla at the We, Robot event held at Warner Bros. studios in California. Elon Musk, the American billionaire, spoke about the safety levels of self-driving cars compared to human-driven vehicles, stating that the safety ratio could be up to ten to twenty times higher. He also mentioned that the cost of driving per mile could be as low as $0.20, while public buses cost up to one dollar per mile.
Tesla plans to launch the CyberCab in full in Texas and California next year, with production starting by 2026, although Musk mentioned that this timeline could extend to 2027. He emphasized that this car will play a significant role in saving lives and reducing injuries.
The innovative design of the CyberCab includes no steering wheel or brakes, requiring regulatory approval before mass production. The vehicle combines Tesla’s features with the spirit of their truck, the Cybertruck, with upward-opening doors giving it a butterfly-like appearance, and seats designed for two people.
Despite Tesla’s main focus on developing robots and artificial intelligence technologies, their entry into the robo-taxi market brings new challenges due to increased scrutiny on safety and potential lawsuits related to accidents involving Tesla’s Autopilot system.
