Protecting Passwords in Google Chrome

As we mentioned in a previous topic about displaying stored passwords on the Google Chrome browser, we saw how stored passwords inside the Google Chrome browser can be accessed by anyone sitting on your device. Although Google Chrome claims that passwords are fully protected from any external breach, let’s ask ourselves if anyone sitting on the device can access the passwords, in case someone manages to breach the device and view the passwords. Therefore, in this topic, we will review ways to protect passwords in the Google Chrome browser.

Initially, you can prevent saving passwords in the Google Chrome browser by copying and pasting this link into the browser chrome://settings, then click on Show advanced settings at the bottom of the page. Then scroll down the page specifically to Password. Then remove the check mark next to “Offer to save passwords I enter on the web”, thus preventing the browser from recording any new passwords, and you can delete old accounts by clicking on Manage saved passwords and then deleting the passwords by clicking on the X mark next to each password.

But how can you protect passwords if you want to register and save them? So far, Google Chrome browser does not have a Master Password feature, unlike the Firefox browser, which allows you to use a Master Password to protect passwords easily. However, for Google Chrome, you need to use browser extensions or password protection programs.

You can use Last Pass to protect passwords in the Google Chrome browser with a Master Password, in addition to many other features. And when you install, choose Google Chrome during installation, and thus the extension will be installed for the Google Chrome browser only. Then you create an account, log in, save passwords, and protect them with a Master Password, and all your passwords and accounts are stored online, and you can watch this video explaining how to use it.

You can also use a program on the device to manage passwords if you do not want to save them online and want to save them on your device, such as the KeePass program, where it manages accounts and passwords and protects them using a Master Password, which is just one password you need to enter to access the accounts and passwords stored on your device.

Despite this, we hope that soon the giant Google Chrome browser will enable the Master Password feature so that the process becomes more secure and protected from breaches and intrusions by others. We hope the topic is useful and thank you.
