Motorola reveals new patent for a foldable phone with smart hinge mechanism

In a new technological step, Motorola has applied for a patent for a smart hinge mechanism aimed at improving the experience of foldable phones. This innovative mechanism adjusts the device’s angle automatically to suit the user’s movement, enhancing the experience of video calls and interacting with the phone in general.

The patent filed with the US Patent Office is titled “Independent Control of Form Factor for Foldable Mobile Device,” revealing the use of special materials capable of shape-shifting in addition to small motors that facilitate easy and precise movement of the hinges. According to the report, these materials use shape memory alloy technology that responds to heat, a feature that allows the hinge to adapt to the user’s needs.

This innovation recalls developments seen in other devices, such as Apple’s “Center Stage” feature, which tracks the user’s movement and adjusts the frame accordingly. However, Motorola aims to deliver enhancements that surpass that, as the new system allows for automatic angle control without relying solely on the webcam.

Foldable phones have always faced challenges related to internal space, especially in providing sufficient battery capacity. But if Motorola succeeds in integrating this advanced technology into its foldable phone while maintaining battery size, we may witness a significant shift in the foldable smart phone market.

Although this technology is still in its early stages of development, the combination of machine learning and advanced materials makes this idea a promising project. Motorola may be on its way to redefining the concept of foldable phones by adding these smart features, opening the door to a new generation of advanced devices.
