Microsoft launches cloud gaming service for games through Xbox
Microsoft plans to launch a new cloud streaming service that allows users to stream any game they own through the Xbox platform, representing a significant shift in the way cloud gaming services are delivered.
According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft is restructuring the model for delivering cloud gaming services. Previously, the service was limited to a pre-determined number of games available to users. However, starting in November, these restrictions will be lifted, allowing users to stream any game they own through Xbox.
This change marks a major expansion in the range of games available for streaming, with the number of titles increasing from hundreds to thousands in the “Project xCloud”. The project will first be rolled out to a limited number of Xbox Insider users in November to test the technical boundaries of the service.
While this service may not be widely available for several months or even next year, the testing phase will begin soon.
This move comes at a time when Xbox is looking to strengthen its presence on Android devices, as players will be able to purchase Xbox games and play them on their Android phones starting in November. They will also be able to stream these titles even if they are not currently listed in the Xbox Cloud Gaming library.
This development puts Microsoft in a stronger competitive position against Nvidia and the GeForce Now service, which currently requires users to own the games they want to stream. However, with the Xbox streaming service, players will be able to stream any game they own, whether purchased through Steam, Epic Games, or other platforms.
While the streaming quality on Xbox still needs improvement, Microsoft may be able to challenge Nvidia if they can improve the game development quality and streaming experience, potentially pushing them to compete directly for the top spot in this field.
