Microsoft and OpenAI enhance the transformation of newsrooms into artificial intelligence.
OpenAI and Microsoft have collaborated to support American news organizations with grants of up to $10 million to develop artificial intelligence tools in newsrooms.
Five media organizations will benefit from the grant, namely: Chicago Public Radio, Star Tribune in Minnesota, Newsday, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Seattle Times. Each organization will hire a specialized expert for two years to develop AI projects and enhance business sustainability.
This move comes at a time when the relationship between journalism and artificial intelligence is under strain, as media organizations have filed lawsuits against the two companies, accusing them of using their content without permission to train AI models.
In a separate development, OpenAI has appointed Aaron Chatterji, a professor of business administration at Duke University and former advisor to Presidents Obama and Biden, as Chief Economist.
