Ke Huy Quan as a humble fighter

People working in sales need a killer instinct, but not in that way. In Love Hurts, Ke Huy Quan’s first feature film since winning an Oscar for his film Everything Everywhere All at Once, he plays a harmless real estate agent and do-gooder who goes back to his old life. A life that included being a cold-blooded killer. Check out the first trailer here.

Directed by Jojo Ouzo, the first appearance of the director of the second unit of Deadpool 2, Hard Night, and The Angry Birds Movie (among many other things), Love Hurts is the latest from 87 North. They are the company that brought you films like John Wick, Nobody, Atomic Blonde, Fast Train, and The Autumn Man, and it’s the specific energy you get in this trailer. Check it out.

Yes, that’s Western Side Story, the Oscar-winning Ariana DeBose as Rose, the beloved friend/girlfriend playing a major role in Quan’s character who leaves a life of crime. The supporting cast also includes Daniel Wu (One) as the evil brother, former football star turned actor Marshaun Lynch (Bottoms), Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage), Leo Titone (Lucy), Reese Darby (Flight of the Conchords, Jumanji Means Death), Andres Erickson (Hard Night) and even Sean Austin (Lord of the Rings).

It’s clear all about Quan, who seems to be directing his almost Everything Everywhere All at Once character a little bit here. Despite his appearance in Loki, he lent his voice to Kung Fu Panda 4, and will soon appear in a Russo Brothers film. Power State, Love Hurts is Quan’s first big screen appearance since winning an Oscar. So, any similarities at all are somewhat strange. It was that unforgettable character who returned a sad man to life through multiple cosmos duplicates of himself. This is the man who hides his true identity to live a normal life, but is forced to reveal it to save everything.

Then again, Love Hurts allows him to be the leading man in a big action film, something he hasn’t been able to do before. He has been uniquely trained to do so, not only because of his acting skills, but because of the time he spent as a fight and stunt coordinator. Somehow, this is the role Chiwetel was born to play. If Ouzo can direct a little of that, this could be a very fun way to start 2025.

Written by Matthew Murray, Josh Stoddard, and Luke Basmore, Love Hurts opens in theaters on February 7th. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.
