How to set up an external microphone in Windows on your computer with simple steps.

If you are interested in using your microphone on your (computer or laptop) for more than just basic personal tasks, you may find yourself in need of a higher quality microphone than the one built into the computer you are using. But how can you set up an external microphone on Windows and make it the default?

Setting up your microphone
Whether you decide to use an external microphone that works via USB or Bluetooth, the first thing you need to do is connect it and install it. Windows usually finds and installs drivers automatically, but if that doesn’t happen for some reason when connecting the microphone, you should check the manufacturer’s website and download the drivers from there.
1.
Once the drivers are installed, it’s time to set up the microphone. Right-click on the volume icon in the taskbar at the bottom right of the screen.
2. Click on the Sound option.

3. In the Sound window, select the Recording tab.
4. Choose the microphone you want to use.

5. Click on the “Setup” button. The Speech Recognition window will open.

6. Click on “Set up microphone” (Note: This tool is designed to improve speech recognition, but using it will also configure the microphone better for your voice.)
7. In the setup wizard, select the type of microphone you want to configure.

8. Click on the Next button.
9. Then, a screen will appear giving you information on how to use your microphone.
10. The wizard will then give you text to read aloud into the microphone. Do so and click Next when finished.
11. Click “Finish” to close the wizard.
You will receive a message if your voice was not recognized during recording. If this happens, it is likely due to muting the microphone or there may be more than one microphone listening to your voice. It will also inform you if you are not heard clearly and will suggest other ways to fix this issue as well.
Testing your microphone
If your microphone is not working correctly at any time, you can go through the following steps to ensure it is functioning.
1. Right-click on the volume icon as we did before to open the Sound window.
2. Click on the Sound command as we did before.
3. Switch to the “Recording” tab to see a list of your installed devices.

4. Speak into the microphone and see if the green bars next to your device move up and down with your voice. If they do, this is an indication that it is working correctly.
