How to restore old Gmail layout and remove the new design 2022
Despite change being a fundamental aspect of life, it can become confusing when it comes to applying or using a service we frequently use. This is exactly what happened to many on July 27th when
Google introduced a new update
for its email service Gmail, bringing a completely new design to the service’s interface to align it with the company’s other services. We previously reviewed the features of the Gmail update in a previous article, but if you are dissatisfied with the new design, luckily, you can revert back to the original design through an option available within the service. It’s not clear how long this option will be available, but at least you can now revert back to the old Gmail design with a few steps, let’s explain more below.

Once you receive the Gmail update, the first thing you’ll notice is the new colors, with message shading in blue and the “Compose” button appearing thicker. The update also aims to unify other messaging tools from Google, such as Google Chat (successor to Google Hangouts) and Google Meet for video calls and conferences similar to the popular Zoom app. Overall, you’ll notice in the new design that the main message display section has different colors, but there are many changes to the sidebar navigation.
In any case, if you don’t like the new design, head to the service’s website at
mail.google.com/mail, then after logging into your Google account, click
on the gear icon (⚙) at the top left of the page
to open the quick settings menu on the left side, where you’ll find the option “Go back to the original view” as shown in the attached image above, then click on it.

A pop-up window will appear where the site asks you to give your reasons for reverting to the old design. You can leave that field blank or write any reason, then click “Reload” and the page will refresh and you’ll be back in Gmail with the old design as shown in the image below. You can repeat the same steps if you change your mind and want to try the new Gmail design. As mentioned, the new design adds shortcuts for Google Chat, Google Spaces, and Google Meet to the menu. If you apply the new design, you’ll notice notifications at the bottom of the screen.
Google has changed the designs of its services, including Gmail, to align with the Material You design offered by Android 12, succeeding the old
Material Design. Users of the new Gmail design can customize some settings to change the appearance of the inbox. You can click the gear icon and go to the Density section to control the spacing between messages.

You can also control the type of messages that appear at the top through the Inbox Type section. You can set an image as a background for Gmail by going to the Themes section and clicking on View all to choose from the available backgrounds or upload one, just select the image you want and click Save.
