How to Install ChatGPT as a Software on Windows System

It is undeniable that ChatGPT has brought a revolution in the world of Generative AI, allowing it to have conversations with humans that rival human performance during their conversations with each other, largely relying on what is known as the Large Language Model. With millions of people flocking to it daily to facilitate their work in various fields, some may prefer to add the bot as an installed application on their system to make it more accessible outside of using ChatGPT within the browser. Fortunately, there are several ways to achieve this for Windows users, below is an explanation to facilitate access to the ChatGPT AI bot and use it on Windows as if it were an application installed on your computer and create a shortcut for it on the desktop or include it in the taskbar and more.

Installing ChatGPT on Windows

If you are using ChatGPT on the web, you may notice that web page interfaces usually contain many extra elements that contribute to distracting attention most of the time, such as different tabs, toolbars, browser menus, bookmarks, and more. Not to mention that searching for the website each time you need to use it or inquire about something urgent may seem tedious and frustrating.
While accessing other installed programs on the computer independently with just a few clicks, especially when creating shortcuts for programs on the desktop or in the taskbar, saves time and effort along with providing more customization options such as themes and scripts.

Using the official ChatGPT application for Windows

OpenAI recently launched a standalone ChatGPT application for Windows after initially releasing it for macOS. The new application allows users to instantly access the AI assistant from anywhere while using the computer, away from the browser. The Windows version also offers some of the same features found in the Mac version, including support for uploading files and images, the ability to provide document summaries generated by AI, support for the DALL-E 3 image generation model, and access to the latest o1-preview model from OpenAI at the time of writing.
Since it is still in the early stages of development, the application does not yet support voice commands, including the newly launched Advanced Voice Mode for the bot. However, the application is currently available for download from the Microsoft Store for free, where you can install it and log in using your personal account to start using the bot.

Converting the ChatGPT website into a web application on Windows

Both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers have this feature that turns web pages into separate standalone applications or programs. Therefore, it can be used to install the ChatGPT website as if it were a program or application on Windows by opening the Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome browser, navigating to the ChatGPT website, then logging into the account.
We then need to go to the options menu for Microsoft Edge browser, click on the (⋯) button or the (⁝) button located at the top of the browser page in the far right of the web address bar. From the browser options menu, we move to the “Apps” or “Cast, save and share” option, leading to a side menu where we select the “Install page as app” option.
The above action will open a popup window to install the application, where we need to write a name for the program to make it easier to find and access it on the computer for future use, let’s say “ChatGPT”. Then finally click on the “Install” button and wait for some time until the application is installed on Windows.
Once the application has been installed on Windows, it will automatically open and run in a separate window where we click on the “Allow” button. Now we can access the ChatGPT website directly from the computer and run it in a separate window without searching on the web browser. All we need to do when we need to use the application in subsequent times is to search for the application name in the “Start” menu like any other application on the computer, then log in to our ChatGPT account.
We can also make accessing the application easier and faster with just one click by adding the application to the taskbar or creating a shortcut for it on the desktop, and enabling the option to start the program automatically upon logging into Windows. To add the application to the taskbar or create a desktop shortcut, all we need to do is press the Win key, then search for the ChatGPT application and once found, click on the “Pin to taskbar” option or drag the program icon outside the search window to appear as a shortcut on the desktop.
The ChatGPT application installed on Windows in this case is considered a Progressive Web Application (PWA), meaning that it is influenced by changing some settings of the web browser that is set as an application installed on the computer through it, which in this case is the Microsoft Edge browser. This feature can be utilized to access some additional features and customizations in the ChatGPT application on Windows such as copying links, pasting media, printing texts, enlarging the program window, and other features by opening the Microsoft Edge web browser and clicking on the three vertical dots button at the far right of the browser’s address bar at the top of the web browser screen to open the browser options and control them as needed.

Uninstalling ChatGPT on Windows

We can easily uninstall the ChatGPT application, which we added to Windows using the above methods, and remove it from the computer whenever we want. All we need to do is open the “Start” menu, search for ChatGPT, then hover the cursor over the application icon, right-click the mouse, select the “Uninstall” option, then click “Uninstall” again to confirm the process.
We can also uninstall the application by pressing the Win key on the keyboard and going to the “Control Panel,” then opening the “Programs” menu and clicking on “Programs and features,” where we select the application from the list of programs installed on the computer and click on it to uninstall it.
