How to force programs and games to use an external Nvidia graphics card
Sometimes, you run a game or program on your computer with powerful specifications, only to find it running very slowly despite your system’s capabilities. You may have a strong external graphics card, yet the games freeze as soon as they are launched. The clear reason for this problem is that the game is running on the internal card rather than the external one. As is known, the internal card has low efficiency and is not suitable for games and programs that require high graphics. This has led us to explain how to run a specific game or program on an external NVIDIA graphics card, allowing you to specify programs to run only on the Nvidia external card. In this article, we will present the same concept in a simpler way.
The idea behind this article is to introduce a new option that appears before running any program, game, or EXE file in general. Through this option, you can choose whether you want to run the program on the external or internal card. Therefore, if the program defaults to running on the internal card, with this option, you can force it to use the external card for smoother performance, especially during gameplay. This option is only available to users with Nvidia graphics cards. As for AMD card users, I recommend the article “Running Games and Programs on the AMD External Graphics Card Instead of the Internal” for reference.
To activate this option, you will need to open the Nvidia control panel in your device’s settings. After installing the graphics card driver, you will find the NVIDIA control panel under the right-click menu options that appear when you right-click on any empty space on the desktop (as shown in the image above). You can also access it through the Windows Control Panel by opening the Start menu and clicking on Control Panel, where you will find the NVIDIA control panel. Click on it to display the card control window.
Through the NVIDIA control panel window that appears on the screen, you can make various adjustments and customize the settings of the graphics card used in your PC or laptop. But for now, we need to click on the Desktop section in the toolbar, then check the box next to “Add ‘Run with graphics processor’ to Context Menu.” This way, an option will be added to the menu options that appear after right-clicking on any EXE file.
Now, you can go to the game or program executable file that runs permanently on the weak internal graphics card. Right-click on this file to see a new option, “Run with graphics processor,” below the program’s run option in the menu. By pointing the mouse to this option, another menu will appear, allowing you to select which graphics card you want to force the program to rely on. Since you want to force it to use the external graphics card, click on “High-performance NVIDIA processor” to open the program and make it utilize the Nvidia card’s performance rather than the internal card from Intel.
