How to delete a Threads account without deleting your Instagram account.

You may remember that last summer, a new social networking app called “Threads” emerged out of nowhere and gained popularity, sparking our curiosity to try it out. Many people liked the app and we thought it would quickly dominate other platforms in general, and Instagram in particular. However, the surprise was that its popularity faded as quickly as it spread, and many users later found that it did not suit them, so they wanted to delete their accounts. The problem was that “Threads” account could not be deleted without deleting the associated Instagram account! At least, that was the case previously. After several updates to the app, it became possible to get rid of “Threads” and keep the Instagram account as it is. Let’s explain how to do that below.

Delete Threads Account While Keeping Instagram Account

When Meta launched the “Threads” app to compete with Elon Musk’s platform “X”, they made it easier to create an account by leveraging the popularity of their giant platform Instagram. Any user of this platform could enter their profile and with just a few clicks, join “Threads”.
Indeed, this strategy proved successful, with around 100 million users joining “Threads” in just the first five days. However, from a long-term perspective, it became evident that linking “Threads” to Instagram was not the most sustainable idea, for two reasons; first, a significant portion of this massive number – the 100 million users – could not be considered real users because their joining the platform was motivated by the ease of creating an account only. The second reason was that deleting a “Threads” account created by an Instagram account would result in the deletion of both accounts together! Many complaints were raised due to this debacle, and Meta company was forced to respond, making deleting the “Threads” account not affecting Instagram accounts.

How to Permanently Delete Your Threads Account

Deleting your “Threads” account has become very easy; whether on Android or iPhone or web version. Just go to the app and enter your profile by clicking on the account icon at the bottom. Then click on the “horizontal bars” icon at the top to enter “Settings” and from there go to “Account” and choose to deactivate or delete the profile.
Now you will see two options; the first is “Deactivate Profile”, and the second is “Delete Profile”. Go with the second option – highlighted in red – to delete your account permanently. You will be asked to enter your Instagram account password to verify your identity. Do that and click “Delete Threads Profile” and the account will be successfully deleted without affecting your Instagram account.

How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Account on Threads

For those who jumped straight here and missed the previous part where we implicitly discussed the method, “Threads” users can temporarily deactivate their accounts on the platform by entering the profile from the designated icon and then accessing “Settings” from the top “horizontal bars” icon. Then we choose “Account” and enter delete profile or deactivate it, and this time instead of clicking on “Delete Profile” to delete the account permanently, we click on Deactivate Profile and confirm by clicking on “Deactivate” until the operation is successful.
By temporarily deactivating your account on the “Threads” platform, you will be logged out of all devices, and your profile or content will not be visible to any other user, unlike deleting the account which will – naturally – delete all the content and any content you shared on this platform. It is worth mentioning that you can easily reactivate your “Threads” account by simply logging back in with Instagram credentials.
