How to Backup Facebook Messenger Messages

Losing important and necessary conversations on any social media platform can be extremely frustrating. In fact, it’s more than just annoying; it can be costly and disastrous if it happens accidentally and is related to work or the company we work for. They may just be valuable messages that are dear to you, carrying beautiful memories that you fear forgetting or losing. Therefore, while we have previously highlighted some add-ons that have the ability to store messages on Facebook Messenger, today we will not need any external add-ons.

Facebook retains your messages for 90 days from the time you wrote them, so you can keep all the conversations that have taken place during this time. Anything outside the 90-day timeframe will not be retrievable again. So, this is your chance to keep your messages every three months in case you need to refer back to them later.

How to Save a Copy of Your Messenger Conversations

First, log in to your Facebook account, then go to Settings and from the menu on the right choose “Your Facebook Information“, then click on “Download Your Information“.

In the Download Your Information page, click on “Deselect All“, then check the box next to “Messages” only. Then click on “Create File” at the top.

You will receive a message informing you that a copy of your information is being processed.

All you have to do is wait until you receive a message on Facebook stating that a copy of your information is ready for download, then wait a few moments, depending on the file size, and you will receive a notification that the file is ready for download.

Reload the page and you will find the file ready for download in front of you. Click on Available Copies.

Then at the bottom of the page, click on “Download“. You will be asked for your password, enter it and then click on “Save File” to download the file. After downloading, go to the file download path on your computer, then unpack the file, and you will find all your messages in the inbox folder. You can open the files and follow the links inside to view the messages on your browser.
