How to activate TRIM Command to Extend the Lifespan of your SSD Hard Drive
Of course, maintaining an expensive SSD hard drive should be a priority, as you don’t want to invest in something that will easily deteriorate over time. In the world of computers, we have discussed many topics that can help you understand how to benefit from this type of hard drives and how to maintain them to the maximum. We have also highlighted some things you should not do with an SSD hard drive in order to avoid such mistakes, one of which is not activating TRIM with an SSD hard drive. Today, we will explain what this command is, how to check if it is enabled on your hard drive, and how to activate it if it is not.
– What is TRIM
The TRIM feature appeared with Windows 7, continued through Windows 8, and even in Windows 10. It is a permanent deletion of files from the hard disk without them being present in the disk’s file table. This means that when you delete files, they are only removed from your view, but their location is stored on the hard drive. When adding new files, the data of old files is deleted from the hard drive first, and then the new files are placed in their location. This can slow down the hard drive and reduce writing speed on it, and the TRIM command directly deletes files. Therefore, this command is very important for SSD hard drives to speed up their performance and because they have a limited number of write times on the hard drive, this command is very beneficial.
– How to check if this command is enabled or not?
Type cmd in the search bar, then select Command Prompt by right-clicking, and choose Run As Administrator to open the command prompt window in front of you.
Copy or type this command in the window in front of you.
fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
If you find 0= as shown in the image, this means that the TRIM command is enabled on your device and your SSD hard drive is ready to work well. But how do you activate TRIM if it is not enabled? If you discover that the TRIM command is not enabled on your device and you intend to activate it, type this command in the same window:
fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0
And if for any reason you want to deactivate this command, do so with this command:
fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 1
Some may not know that by activating this command, you will not be able to recover your deleted files using any recovery software because the files are permanently deleted now. However, this will prolong the life of your hard drive and enhance its efficiency.
