How to activate and use fingerprint reader on Windows 10 laptop
In a previous topic, we explained how to activate the Fingerprint feature on a laptop or computer, which makes it easy for users to protect their devices from intruders. This process eliminates the need for typing a password or PIN. Simply swipe your finger over the fingerprint reader and start using the computer. In Windows 10, with the unique Windows Hello feature, the process is much easier, allowing you to use fingerprint or facial recognition via the camera to log in to Windows or applications within seconds. Recently, I got a laptop with a Fingerprint reader, so I will review the activation and use of the fingerprint in this article.
First, in Windows 10, go to the Settings application either through the Start menu or by pressing the Windows key + I on the keyboard at the same time. Navigate to the Accounts section and from the side menu, go to the Sign-in Options page where you will find various options for choosing how to log in to Windows. Among these options, you will find Windows Hello.
If your laptop has a compatible webcam for Windows Hello or a fingerprint reader, even if it is a USB for devices without a built-in Fingerprint, you should find a Set up button under Windows Hello to enable and use the feature. However, for devices that do not support Windows Hello due to lack of a dedicated camera or fingerprint reader, you will see a message “Windows Hello isn’t available on this device”.

As I mentioned earlier, I got a laptop with a built-in fingerprint reader. However, when I tried to activate Windows Hello, I received a message saying “Windows Hello isn’t available on this device,” which made me think that this fingerprint reader was fake! How can my device not support the feature? I immediately went to the Device Manager tool to search for a specific driver for the fingerprint reader, but I could not find it.
I visited the device support page on the manufacturer’s official website, where I found a custom driver for the fingerprint reader. I downloaded and installed it, then tried again to activate Windows Hello, and this time it was successful. So, if your device has a fingerprint reader or a camera capable of facial recognition, but the system tells you that Windows Hello is not available, search for the correct driver and install it, and it will work without any issues.
Now the “Set up” button appeared to me, so I clicked on it and then pressed “Get Started” to set up the feature and let the system recognize and save the fingerprint. All you have to do is place any finger from your hand on the Fingerprint reader several times until it can recognize all the fingerprint details and save it. The process will take only a minute or less, and then the fingerprint recognition phase will be completed.
You will receive a message “All set,” so anytime you shut down and restart your computer, or generally when the system asks you to verify your identity from the lock screen before moving to the desktop or when trying to log in to a specific application, the process will be completed with just one step, which is swiping your finger over the fingerprint reader for the system to recognize the fingerprint and match it with the stored one. When the fingerprints match, you will successfully log in within seconds. Also, note that you can press the “Add another finger” option if you want to use another finger in case the first finger is injured – may God forbid – preventing the system from recognizing the fingerprint.
