Trailers
We got a sneak peek at Claire Obscure during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024. The trailer shows a twisted and broken world with a towering glowing building at the distance 34 glow meters on its surface. The narrator, whom we later learn is named Gustav, explains that a mysterious artist decreases the number by 1 every year. Anyone at this age will disappear into thin air, eventually leading to human extinction. However, an exploratory journey is sent every year to try and stop it. Our journey will take place one day before drawing the number 33 in a final attempt to break the cycle of death.
We don’t know the details of this exploratory journey or the challenges that await, although part of it will involve discovering the fate of some of the previous 32 exploratory journeys and why they failed to stop the artist.
The game and world are said to be inspired by the art of the Belle Époque in France, which is evident in the many references to French architectural design. The trailer showcases a variety of environments we will travel through, including twisted cities, snowy mountains, and even the ocean floor.
Our cast of characters on this exploratory journey includes a strange figure named Verso, Renoir fighting for his family, engineer Gustave, mage Lune, warrior Sciel, and young orphan Maelle.
Gameplay
Claire Obscure is a role-playing game with real-time elements. Most commands will be issued through menus at your own pace, but button prompts for extra damage, evasion, or counterattacks will require quick reactions to keep the player engaged. On the other hand, missing a button prompt or counter opportunity will result in less damage or receiving more. Gear will play a role, as expected in an RPG, along with various status effects and elemental attacks.
The first look at gameplay gives us a great slice of the game to see how everything works. We can see how we will control one character while roaming in an environment, although the entire group is inherently there. Enemies will appear in the world and allow you to attack them for an advantage in battle, meaning the reverse could also happen.
In addition to your usual choices regarding items, skills, and attacks, there is also a targeting option where you can freely aim at an enemy with a ranged attack.
The turn order is displayed on the left side of the screen to know exactly when the enemy’s turn will come, but it seems that some actions may affect the order.
There are also bonuses you can earn for more experience points after battles, such as increasing experience points by 20% when winning without taking damage.
Pre-orders
We only know that the exploratory journey will start sometime in Spring 2025 at the moment, so pre-orders are not ready yet. If you’re excited, you can still wishlist the game on any platform to be notified when pre-orders start. Of course, we will also keep this post updated with the latest information when it becomes available.
