Today is the 30th birthday of the famous game Solitaire… Learn about its story

Decades ago, in the early nineties to be exact, when Windows computers started becoming a daily routine at home, one of the entertainment options available was diving into the games they had installed.

It is clear that by the time the nineties arrived, computers had been years into becoming a gaming platform, but this was not widely known, which is why the first concept of a game in it was Solitaire.
To talk about the history of Windows Solitaire, it is necessary to go back to the year 1988, when a Microsoft intern named Wes Cherry had the idea of designing the game in a moment of complete boredom.
Cherry said in an interview with Great Big Story that in the late eighties and early nineties, people started to grasp the idea of owning multiple games at that time, so they had to do it from a computer at home.
Microsoft’s idea with the Solitaire game was to teach people how to use the mouse and to make something that would make them spend enjoyable time.
The development of Solitaire came to Bill Gates himself, who was of course overseeing everything included in Windows. According to Cherry, his words were precise, and they only hinted that the game was extremely difficult to win.
Solitaire first appeared to the public as part of Windows 3.0, an operating system released in May 1990.
As for the amount he was paid for his contribution to the popular technology culture by designing this game, Cherry says he didn’t receive a single cent.
