McAfee Antivirus Program Founder Commits Suicide in Barcelona

John McAfee, the founder of the cybersecurity company and antivirus software bearing his name, committed suicide this afternoon in the city of Barcelona, Spain.

McAfee was imprisoned in this city at the Brians 2 prison complex, where authorities found him dead. The case is currently under investigation, as reported by El País newspaper.

The 75-year-old American businessman was awaiting extradition to the United States where he would face charges of tax evasion.

The founder of the antivirus company was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020, before he could board a flight to Turkey; authorities sent him to prison where he was being investigated for tax evasion between 2014 and 2017, related to profits from cryptocurrency.

John McAfee’s tax debt in the United States was already $4 million. The businessman was always controversial and involved in various scandals throughout his life after founding McAfee in the 1980s, following roles as a programmer at NASA and a mathematician in his youth.

He was also a mathematician by profession, suspected of murder during his time in Belize in 2010, as well as other matters related to the use of toxic substances.
