Activating the new Screenshots feature in the Firefox browser

In a step to enhance the user experience of its browser, Mozilla has added a new feature within version 55 of Firefox that allows users to take a screenshot from within the browser without the need for add-ons or external tools. Although most browsers currently have this integrated feature, such as Microsoft Edge and Opera, the Screenshots feature in Firefox is somewhat unique. However, by default, this feature is disabled in the browser and users will need to manually enable it after updating to version 55, so I will review how to activate it and how to use it in this article.

As mentioned earlier, you will need to update your Firefox browser to the latest version 55 to get the new Screenshots feature. If you do not know how to do this, it is simple. All you have to do is click on the menu button and then click on the question mark icon at the bottom, then choose About Firefox to check for and download the new updates, and restart the browser after completion. Now you can follow the steps below.

After opening a new tab in Firefox, type “about:config” in the address bar at the top of the browser and press Enter. A warning screen will appear, ignore it and click on “I accept the risk“. Then, once you enter the Config page, type “extensions.screenshots.system-disabled” in the search field. The required value will appear, right-click on it and from the menu that appears, click on “Toggle” to change the value from True to False as shown in the image above.

Once you have applied the above steps, you will notice a new “Take a screenshot” icon in the toolbar at the top of the browser. By clicking on it, you will see a quick overview of the Screenshots feature in the browser and its great features such as automatically identifying important parts of the web page to facilitate screenshot capture, capturing a full page screenshot, saving screenshots in your library, and creating a custom link to easily share the screenshot with others.

To start using the feature, simply click once on the “Take a screenshot” icon in the browser toolbar. Then, you can either click on a specific area of the open web page to capture it or drag with your mouse to select a specific part of the site. Note that you can drag to the end of the web page if you want to capture a full website image. After selecting a part, three basic options will appear, either cancel and take a new screenshot, download the image to your device, or save it to upload the image to your library for saving screenshots.

If you click on the “Save” button, the image will be added to your personal library, which includes all the screenshots you have taken. You can easily share any of these screenshots by clicking on any image and copying the customized link from the address bar to send it to the other party. When they click on the link, they can download it or save it to their own library. Note that the other party can see from which website you took this screenshot.
