Features and Capabilities of Windows 10
Windows 10 includes many new features and enhancements that we will discuss in the following paragraphs:
Start Menu
The Start menu in Windows 10 has been improved and expanded to make it easier to find important programs, making it more user-friendly and flexible compared to the menu in Windows 8.
Microsoft Edge Browser
The new browser was designed to provide Windows users with a better web browsing experience. It is faster, more secure, and includes many new features. Microsoft Edge aims to replace Internet Explorer as your default web browser, but you can still use another browser if you prefer.
Cortana
Cortana is a built-in virtual assistant with Windows 10, similar to Siri and Google Now. You can interact with this virtual assistant using your computer’s microphone. Cortana can answer questions like “What’s the weather today?” and perform simple tasks like reminding you to empty the recycle bin.
Multiple Desktops and Task View
The Multiple Desktops feature allows you to temporarily move some open windows to a virtual desktop instead of keeping all windows open on the main desktop interface. This feature helps you easily manage open windows and also makes it easier to view new tasks.
Action Center
The new Action Center is completely different from previous versions of Windows. It has been expanded to allow you to access frequently used settings like Wi-Fi connection and tablet mode. It is also where you will see important notifications, so if your computer receives an update, you will be notified here.
Tablet Mode
Unlike Windows 8, Windows 10 clearly distinguishes between desktop computers and tablets. If you are using a keyboard and mouse with Windows 10, you will default to desktop mode. If your computer also has a touchscreen, you can switch to tablet mode at any time. Tablet users can also switch back to desktop mode if they prefer.
Should You Upgrade to Windows 10?
As you can see, Windows 10 is very similar to older versions like Windows 8. It is faster, more secure, and Microsoft will continue to support it for several years. If your computer is currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and meets the system requirements, you can upgrade to Windows 10 by purchasing it from Microsoft. For all these reasons, we recommend upgrading your computer to Windows 10 if possible. We will discuss how to do so in our lesson on updating to Windows 10.
