A recent report published by The New York Times revealed the deteriorating relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft after five years of fruitful collaboration. This decline is due to the financial pressures faced by OpenAI, as well as the lack of computing power provided by Microsoft, in addition to disagreements between the parties regarding the basic rules of cooperation.
Interestingly, there is a clause in OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft that stipulates cutting off Microsoft’s access to OpenAI’s technologies if the latter succeeds in developing what is known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which can compete with human thinking. This clause aims to ensure that Microsoft does not misuse the technology, according to the report based on statements from nineteen individuals familiar with the nature of the relationship between the two companies.
Under Sam Altman’s leadership, the management of OpenAI can determine when AGI is achieved. Altman has previously indicated that this moment will be somewhat objective, as approaching this point will make it difficult to determine how close AGI achievement is, because the transition will be more gradual and mysterious than people imagine.
