Criticism Directed at Call of Duty 6 for Hiding one of its Features Behind a “Paywall”
The game Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is now available to everyone around the world, but some players were surprised to find out that one of the new features in the game requires a payment of $20 to activate.
According to Playstation Lifestyle, the reaction of some players who started playing the game in the early hours of the morning was observed after they learned that they would not be able to use the “Custom Sound Profile” feature in the new enhanced headset mode, which uses advanced sound technology designed by Embody.
Although this new additional feature is new to the game, improvements that come from third-party applications are not new to the world of audio technology. While the regular sound features in Black Ops 6 are more than sufficient, those who use headsets and choose not to pay for a personal profile file will not have any impact on their gameplay.
Nevertheless, this did not stop some players from objecting and criticizing the “pay-to-listen” feature, fearing that this feature may give those who can afford it new advantages to easily win in multiplayer mode.
Activision previously mentioned in a statement about the enhanced sound feature from Embody in Black Ops 6, describing it as allowing players to choose to enhance the sound experience (HRTF) more by creating a personal profile file that takes into account the player’s physical characteristics, such as the shape of their ears or head.
We do not know if this feature has any impact on sound detection, which enables players to recognize the direction of their opponents by listening to their footsteps, a skill that gives them an edge. But based on the information provided by Activision, it seems that the feature is only used to enhance quality and not to provide additional advantages for winning in the game.
