Comprehensive Review and Evaluation of Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2

The Warhammer 40K series has long been a standout in the world of video games, with several games and releases that have garnered the admiration of players worldwide. However, one title that was released several years ago remained in the shadows for a while before making a comeback. This title is Space Marine, which, for many players, left a good impression in the past. The announcement of the sequel garnered a widespread response from players some time ago, and we were also excited to hear about the return of this title, which is being developed by the Focus team and Saber Interactive, the team behind the game World War Z. We noticed their inspiration from the latter and their desire to present it in a different way in the game Space Marine 2. We will try to introduce you to it through this comprehensive review of the game that we had the opportunity to experience a few days ago.

Basic Information:

Game Title: Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2
Developer: Saber Interactive
Publisher: Focus
Genre: Action-Adventure Third-Person Perspective
Release Date: September 9, 2024
Platforms: Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, PC

We will first discuss the game’s story, which takes place in the Warhammer 40K universe. About a hundred years have passed since the end of the events of the first part, during which several changes occurred, the most important of which is the return of the hero, Titus, to the forefront after being the leader of a Space Marine group in the past. However, after an incident, he is demoted to the rank of lieutenant within the famous group and embarks on the events of the game during the Tyranids invasion of many planets. The Ultramarines units try to stand against them and prevent their advance, accompanied by several key characters like Chairon and Gadriel, who will be your allies in battle if you choose to fight alone.

The game also offers a direct and easy cooperative gameplay system that allows you to invite your friends and embark on the adventure with them. The events of the game, in general, were very exciting and filled with strong moments where the action elements are present. Personally, I liked the storytelling format of the game, gradually delving into it, even though its duration is not long. You can finish it in a single session in about 12 to 15 hours of gameplay.

The game offers a variety of difficulty levels, making the task easy at times. Regarding the game’s content, it provides multiple elements in addition to the main story. It delves deeper into the experience through the PvE mode, where you face a series of missions with other players online, with the ability to unlock rewards and customize your character. You can also work on upgrading and improving several tools as you progress, in addition to choosing several playable classes such as warrior, tactician, attacker, armored, and more.

Space Marine 2 not only offers this level of content but also features a classic multiplayer mode, consisting of three modes: extermination, control, and seizure. You can experience a variety of character formations and classes alongside other players in 6v6 battles. This diversity and opportunity for success in both the successful story mode and the deep multiplayer gameplay with fresh ideas make it a standout title, despite its classic elements that do not disappoint fans of the previous original release.

Moving on to an important aspect that we typically review, gameplay, Space Marine 2 provides a third-person perspective gameplay system that, in my opinion, is one of the main reasons for the success the game has achieved. The development team managed to present a beautiful formula by maintaining the key elements of success from the first part while enhancing them further.

The game relies on a control system that focuses on shooting and melee combat against hordes of Tyranids that have invaded all the galaxies. It allows you to smoothly use melee weapons such as the sword and chainsaw, with the ability to seamlessly integrate them with firearms without any complications. Additionally, there is a diverse selection of heavy weapons that the current generation consoles have managed to present correctly, both visually and in terms of detailed power, which we will discuss in the following paragraphs.

Returning to the main character Titus’ gameplay style, it focuses on direct confrontations and combat with melee and ranged weapons, making the experience dynamic and highly enjoyable. It offers a simple and straightforward gameplay system without any complexities, with the buttons appropriately distributed on the controller. The presence of assisting characters whom you can direct and give orders to adds to the gameplay experience.

All of these factors have made the gameplay experience excellent in Space Marine 2 in all modes of the game’s content, which remains consistent despite the skills and features it offers. For example, in the cooperative PvE mode, this does not diminish the enjoyment in any way, and personally, I consider it one of the pleasant surprises this year, especially in light of several disappointments from titles that were anticipated in the past months.

Now we come to the final parts of the review of Space Marine 2, which are naturally related to technical aspects, graphics, and sound. The development team at Saber Interactive, while working on this project, relied on the Swarm Engine graphics engine, which, despite the concerns behind it, in my opinion, delivered a fantastic performance on the home console version, at least in my experience of the game on a PlayStation 5 device. The game provides a performance mode supporting 60 frames at 1080p resolution and a quality mode at 4K resolution and 30 frames.

This was all at a fantastic level of detail, and I particularly liked the performance mode, especially since the game relies on speed and action-packed combat. However, the quality mode provides very clear details in the image, but the common denominator between them is maintaining the details and visual effects in the game, creating a sense of the surrounding environment. Despite the dense elements within the same scene, I rarely encountered any frame rate drops, and technically, the game was polished well throughout the hours of gameplay, without encountering any technical issues that affected my experience.

This fact makes it one of the most important games of this year, even though it did not benefit from the large media attention and promotion unlike other titles that failed to deliver what was expected from them. Returning to the graphics of Space Marine 2, they stood out with detailed designs in the environment and strong visual effects, along with high-quality lighting distribution that confirms why the game is exclusive to current-generation consoles.

One drawback that must be mentioned is the repetition in enemy encounters, as there is a lack of variety at this level and a dearth of creative ideas, which can sometimes make you feel bored. However, apart from that, Space Marine 2 excels in graphics, especially in terms of character and weapon designs, displaying a significant effort to present them in this way. You feel the weight of the character and the weapon, especially when activating the interactive button feature with the DualSense controller, which it supports, pending support for dynamic sensor technologies in a later update.

We continue in this paragraph, this time focusing on the sound, which also did not disappoint with a lineup of performers with an excellent performance and strong presence in all main story events and scenes at least. In addition, dynamic sound effects and reliance on environmental sounds add to the fun atmosphere and help immerse you in the game’s world, especially when using headphones and activating the 3D sound feature supported by the game, amidst a selection of fantastic musical pieces. Not to mention the weapon sounds and their special effects, which are also considered among the details that the development team did not neglect.

In conclusion, Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2, despite being awaited for many years before finally being seen, did not disappoint and provided an excellent formula for fans of the series, both in terms of the story events and its content, which will be supported throughout future updates and seasons according to statements from the development team. This reflects the team’s interest in the project, which, in my opinion, succeeded in outlining it initially through very successful choices and well-implemented ideas, making Space Marine 2 one of the standout surprises of the year.

Final Rating: 9/10
