Chris Hemsworth may play the lead role in Disney’s film Prince Charming.
Deadline reports that Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star as Prince Charming in a new Disney project from Paddington and Enchanted director Paul King.
Prince Charming is based on a script co-written by King with Simon Farnaby and John Croker; the exact nature of the story and its details are currently under wraps, but unless it reveals itself to be a simple rom-com story using a name like The Perfect Man or Think You, it may involve some twists on the stock character found in previous Disney fairy tales like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and others. The outlet notes, “Insiders add that the film will not be connected specifically to Cinderella,” likely happening not as a straightforward retelling of a Disney film from the perspective of royal shoe-obsessed love interests.
Jeff Sneider, an entertainment industry insider, broke news of the project and Hemsworth’s involvement in his newsletter last week, so Deadline’s report is an additional confirmation that this film is real and moving forward. It begs the question: If not specifically related to Cinderella, what is it? And why is Disney interested?
Perhaps Prince Charming will truly be a kind of think piece about stock characters, akin to a Greta Gerwig Barbie article, with Hemsworth as a stuttering embodiment of metaphor – akin to Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Ken. Maybe it will be more akin to a modern retelling of Stepford Wives, a 1996 TV sequel Wives of Stepford with Mr. Hemsworth replacing Michael Ontkean. How are perfect short story men made, and for what purpose? Will Hemsworth’s Charming become self-aware and lead a revolution of his peers as they ponder the reason for their curse of playing second fiddle to their princess counterparts? We’ll find out soon enough.
