WhatsApp is preparing a feature you will love. Especially if you receive hundreds of messages daily in groups, including news of all kinds and suspicious images from unknown sources. In an attempt to curb fake news and scams through its service, the company is working on developing a type of image verification tool.

Its goal is to be able to verify whether the image you received is real, get more context about it, and determine whether it is a montage or something created using artificial intelligence. This tool is not only great news, but increasingly necessary. WhatsApp has become one of the most relevant sources of information on the subject in recent years, so the image verification tool is indeed needed.

Thanks to WABetaInfo, we can know how the new image verification tool works. To verify the origin of the image and give you more context about it, WhatsApp needs to upload it to its servers.

Now, as we see in the leaked screenshots, the function has become very simple. All you have to do is open the received image, click on the three dots menu, and open “Search on web.” From there, WhatsApp will use Google to compare the image with Google’s large database and tell you what it knows about it.

The idea, of course, is to get more information about what is shown, whether it is a fake image, edited, or created with artificial intelligence.

So, when this feature becomes available on WhatsApp, you will be able to verify whether that suspicious image someone sent you is real or if it’s a montage to make you believe something that is not true in reality. When will this feature arrive? Currently, it is in the testing phase, but it is expected to roll out to the app for everyone in the coming weeks.
