Author of The Witcher series does not profit from the games and reveals several truths.
The Witcher game series, well-known to many, first started as an adaptation by CD Projekt team from the novels of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Before the appearance of the game, Sapkowski was already famous for his Witcher book series.
From there, the idea of the CD Projekt team emerged to adapt the game from Sapkowski’s novels. CD Projekt team was not the first to approach the author, as another team had previously approached him, asking for substantial amounts of money in exchange for relinquishing the series.
Before the CD Projekt team arrived with a bag full of money and the author relinquishing all rights to the novel, Sapkowski admitted in an interview with Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese that he was foolish to sign the contract.
He mentioned that CD Projekt team had offered him a certain percentage of the profits from the series sales, but he refused, demanding full payment, citing that he did not expect the series to be successful as a video game, which he confirmed in a statement:
“I didn’t hesitate to ask for my money. I was foolish to give up my novel. I didn’t expect it to succeed like this, and now I’m reaping the consequences of my hastiness.”
It is clear that the author is facing difficulties as he is no longer well-known in his own country and his hasty decision to relinquish The Witcher series has taken a toll on his psyche. Best regards.
