At an Unbelievable Price.. Huawei Surpasses Everyone and Launches the World’s First Triple-Fold Phone
Huawei revolutionized the world of smartphones by launching the Mate XT Ultimate – the world’s first smartphone with a screen divided into three parts that can be folded twice, known as “trifold” in marketing terms. This phone offers an exceptional experience for users with its large foldable screen that can be used in multiple modes, but it comes with a very high price tag.
The phone features a screen that measures 10.2 inches when fully opened, and when the left part is folded back, the phone becomes a foldable device with a 7.9-inch screen, and when the right side is folded, it turns into a compact phone with a 6.4-inch screen.
Despite its intricate design, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate phone is extremely slim at 3.6mm when fully opened and weighs only 298 grams, including the large camera system similar to the Mate X5 foldable phone.
The single foldable screen is a flexible LTPO OLED type that supports a 120Hz refresh rate and displays 10 billion colors.
The full screen resolution is 3,184×2,232 pixels, and this resolution changes to 2,232×2,048 and 2,232×1,008 pixels depending on the fold and display mode.
Huawei has named this resolution 3K, as a middle ground between the popular 2K and 4K resolutions. The full display is 10.2 inches with a 16:11 aspect ratio, and Huawei claims to enhance screen quality using “AI image enhancement technologies.”
The phone features a rear camera system similar to the Mate X5, but integrates features from Huawei’s P series, including a 50-megapixel main camera with PDAF and OIS optical stabilization, with a variable lens aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0 like the P60 Pro phone.
Other cameras include a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with up to 5.5x optical zoom, and an ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera, as well as a laser focus system.
The phone also features an 8-megapixel front camera integrated into a small opening in the large screen, which functions as a selfie camera when the device is folded.
Huawei says that the Mate XT Ultimate trifold phone relies on a hinge system inspired by the Chinese Tiangong space station, with a design that allows for internal and external folding using two tracks and moving parts to ensure a gapless fold. The hinges are made from a composite material that includes non-Newtonian fluids, adding durability.
The company states that using the single screen mode on the phone is ideal for daily tasks, while the dual screen mode is suitable for web browsing and reading, and the fully open trifold mode is ideal for detailed work or studying.
The company has not revealed the type of processor used, but the device comes with 16GB of RAM.
The phone also supports the enhanced voice assistant Xiaoyi, known internationally as Celia, with AI features including voice-to-text conversion, automatic screen splitting, instant document translation, and image enhancements.
All these features run on HarmonyOS 4.2, a proprietary system built by the company based on an open-source Android environment without Google services.
A key feature in the trifold phone is only available in the Chinese market, which is the ability to connect to satellite reception and transmission, as the phone connects to Tiantong satellites through a local Chinese communication company.
The Mate XT Ultimate battery consists of three silicon carbide cells with a total capacity of 5,600 mAh. The phone supports wired charging at 66W, wireless charging at 50W, and reverse wired and wireless charging at 7.5W and 5W respectively.
The phone is available in black and red colors with elegant gold accents around the hinges, edges, and camera.
The price of the phone starts at 19,999 Chinese Yuan (equivalent to $2,800/€2,550) for the 256GB storage version, 21,999 Chinese Yuan ($3,100/€2,800) for the 512GB version, and 23,999 Chinese Yuan ($3,400/€3,100) for the 1TB version, prices never seen before for a phone.
It is unlikely that the Mate XT Ultimate will be released outside of China, especially since Huawei’s last global foldable phone release was 18 months ago when they introduced the Mate X3 in markets outside their home country.
