Anthropologist predicts emergence of general artificial intelligence by 2026
Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence, expressed his vision for the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI) in an article on his personal blog. AGI is a type of artificial intelligence that has broad cognitive abilities, enabling it to understand, think, and create like humans.
Amodei indicated that advanced AGI systems may emerge by 2026, although he cautioned that it may take much longer, acknowledging the lack of clarity in his timeline. He painted an optimistic picture of the potential benefits of AGI, expecting significant progress in medicine, neuroscience, and poverty alleviation within 5 to 10 years of developing advanced artificial intelligence systems.
Amodei suggested that such artificial intelligence could treat most diseases, contribute to the treatment of mental illnesses, and increase the average life expectancy of humans. While he avoids overhyping the potential of AI, he expressed concern about excessive discussion surrounding it.
Amodei emphasized that risks are the main obstacle to realizing the positive potentials of AI, believing that most people do not appreciate the opportunities or risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence accurately. His article was published as Anthropic seeks new investors for a funding round that could value the company at $40 billion.
Amodei’s optimistic vision for the future of artificial intelligence aligns with other leaders, such as Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind (a subsidiary of Google) and recent Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. Hassabis predicted the capability of AI to cure all diseases in the future.
