Being the most popular sports game in the world, it was not surprising to see EA Sports FC 25 topping the US sales charts for September, surpassing the platform game Astro Bot, according to data from market research company Circana.
The game saw double-digit growth compared to EA Sports FC 24 during its launch month in September 2023, and Matt Piscatella, the executive director of video games at Circana, said this was enough to record the highest launch month sales in the US for any football game released so far.
The exclusive PS5 game Astro Bot entered the list in second place, appearing for the first time as the 25th best-selling game of 2024 so far. Other new releases that made it to the top 20 games in September include The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom exclusive to the Switch in fourth place, NBA 2K25 in seventh place, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 in 18th place.
The PS5 remains the best-performing platform in terms of unit and dollar sales in September, with the Xbox Series X/S ranking second in dollars and the Switch ranking second in units. Digital PS5 platforms now account for 18% of the total platform unit sales to date, while sales of the Xbox Series X now make up the majority (51%) of total Xbox Series sales in the US.
Total consumer spending in the US on gaming hardware, content, and accessories decreased by 6% year over year in September to $4.38 billion, driven by a 44% decrease in hardware spending and a 3% decrease in content spending. On the other hand, consumer spending remains stable year over year at $40.67 billion.
