AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D may cost more than expected.
The increasing number of leaks surrounding the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D tells us one thing – AMD’s best gaming processor is now just around the corner. Today, the first listings of the central processing unit have surfaced, giving us an idea of the pricing we can expect. While they are everywhere, they all show us one thing: price increase. At the same time, leaked benchmarks reveal a high clock speed for the boost clock.
It may seem a bit early for the 9800X3D to appear in the wild, but all the murmurs about the CPU suggest that AMD will announce the chip this week – just one day after Intel’s Ultra Core 200-S release. With reports indicating a release date for the 9800X3D in the first week of November, we are now seeing a few retailers jumping the gun and listing the CPU early.
As spotted by harukaze5719 on X (formerly Twitter), BLT listed the 9800X3D for $525. Considering the 7800X3D was launched at $450, this is a significant price hike. It may not be all bad, as Tech America (via momomo_us) lists the CPU at a more acceptable $484. This is still a price increase, but much more reasonable.
What is the ideal price for the 9800X3D? It’s hard to say as the 7800X3D has sold out everywhere, resulting in constant high demand – opening the door for a more expensive successor to the world’s best gaming CPU. On the other hand, the 9700X was launched at $360, making it difficult to gauge the level of artificial support the 9800X3D will offer. Naturally, gaming performance is expected to be significantly better.
According to benchmarks shared on the Anandtech forums by users like Igor_Kavinski and itsmydamnation, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D may come with an astonishing boost in clock speed. The CPU was seen running at speeds of up to 5.7GHz, representing an improvement over the 7800X3D, which maxed out at 5GHz. These results were achieved on an engineering sample with Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) enabled. The screenshot also shows the PC running Windows 10 22H2, so the results may improve as Zen 5 CPU performance is better after the latest Windows update.
The CPU was also benchmarked hitting 25258 points in the multi-core Cinebench R23 test, outperforming both the 9700X and 7800X3D, but – unsurprisingly – falling miles behind the likes of the Core i9-14900K. However, with the powerful 3D V-Cache, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D should excel in gaming scenarios. The question is not whether it will deliver good results, but how much of a leap it will provide compared to its predecessor.
Another leak, this time spotted by VideoCardz, revealed the base clock frequency of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and there is also an improvement there. MaxSun listed the CPU with a base clock of 4.7GHz, much higher than the 3.8GHz offered by the 9700X. It won’t be long until we know the final specifications of the CPU, and until then, it’s important to take all the above with a grain of salt.
