Amazon shifts towards nuclear energy by building small reactors to enhance energy sustainability.
Amazon has announced the signing of three major agreements to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), enhancing its position in the clean energy sector and putting it alongside tech giants such as Microsoft and Google. These reactors are characterized by their small size and quick construction compared to traditional reactors, allowing for more efficient energy production at lower costs.
Amazon has entered into a partnership with Energy Northwest to build four nuclear reactors in Washington state, with an initial production capacity of up to 320 megawatts and the potential to expand to 960 megawatts in the future. It has also collaborated with X-energy to develop an innovative design for these reactors, reflecting a serious commitment to broader nuclear energy use.
At the same time, Amazon is negotiating with Dominion Energy to develop a small nuclear reactor project near a power station in Virginia, aiming to generate 300 megawatts of electricity, further solidifying the role of nuclear energy in achieving energy sustainability.
Amazon has indicated that these projects will contribute to creating significant local employment opportunities, with the Energy Northwest project expected to provide up to 1000 temporary jobs during the construction phase and 100 permanent jobs upon project completion, boosting the region’s economy and providing a strong boost to the job market.
