Amazon plans to build small nuclear reactors
Amazon has signed three new agreements to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a modern technology known for its fast construction and small size compared to traditional reactors. This comes in line with similar investments in nuclear energy from tech companies such as Microsoft and Google.
The first step includes a partnership with “Energy Northwest” in Washington State to build four reactors capable of generating 320 megawatts initially, with the potential to expand to 960 megawatts in the future. Amazon has also collaborated with X-energy to provide an advanced reactor design for this project.
On the other hand, Amazon is exploring the possibility of developing a small nuclear reactor project in collaboration with “Dominion Energy” near a nuclear power station in Virginia that could contribute to generating 300 megawatts of power.
Amazon says that these agreements will create job opportunities, as the “Energy Northwest” project is expected to provide 1,000 temporary jobs during construction and around 100 permanent jobs after completion.
