Amazon has launched its first color e-reader in history, called the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, alongside new versions of other Kindle devices.
The company aims to provide a reading experience with rich colors that resemble paper, allowing users to see book covers, pictures, and illustrated stories as authors intended, as well as being able to differentiate texts using colored markers instead of traditional gray.
Despite the device’s focus on reading, Amazon has ensured an excellent experience in both color and black-and-white display. The company promises that the screen will provide high contrast, excellent clarity, and fine details whether displaying a colored image or black and white page. According to Amazon, images can be enlarged without appearing pixelated or distorted.
The new device closely resembles the Paperwhite Signature Edition in design but comes with a different screen. It boasts a 25% faster page-turning speed compared to the previous version.
While adding a color screen may affect the device’s speed, contrast ratio, and battery life, Amazon has made hardware and software adjustments to overcome these challenges. The company has used nitride LED lights that work in conjunction with its algorithms to improve colors and lighting without compromising image quality.
Colorsoft is the first device in the Kindle series to come with a color screen, although it’s not the first on the market. For example, the reMarkable Paper Pro device supports writing with colored digital pens.
However, Colorsoft does not support writing like Paper Pro or Kindle Scribe, but excels in price, as it is now available for pre-order at $280 and will start shipping on October 30.
