Activating Dark Mode on Facebook on Android and iPhone
Many important applications such as Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp have embraced dark mode as a solution to prevent eye strain when using smartphones at night – except for one app: Facebook. As we have all seen, both the Facebook website and app underwent a major redesign that saw the elimination of the blue color in favor of white becoming the main color. While the dark mode can be activated on the website after the new design, the Facebook app for smartphones still remains bright without support for dark mode.
As frustrating as this may be, the company took enough time to test the feature before rolling it out to the general users. Finally, the long-awaited day has arrived, as Facebook has started gradually rolling out a new update to the app that includes dark mode. Here’s how to activate it on both Android and iPhone devices with ease.
Since we look at the Facebook social network daily through our smartphones, it was necessary to find ways to reduce the negative effects of continuous use of the Facebook app. Before the arrival of dark mode, we reviewed more than one way to make browsing Facebook in low light conditions less harmful to the eyes. While it was effective, it was not practical, especially for iPhone users. Therefore, the presence of dark mode in the app by Facebook was necessary for a complete “night” experience on the smartphone.
As usual, getting a new feature in any app always requires downloading the latest available version of that app in the app store. This applies to Facebook as well, as we noticed the appearance of dark mode after downloading the latest version of the Facebook app from the App Store on the iPhone, which carries the version number 294.0.0.48.120. Therefore, the first step is to go to the app store, whether it be the App Store or Google Play, and check for the latest updates available for the main Facebook app and download them. The arrival of dark mode to the Facebook app is already spreading to all users gradually. To activate it, you must:
Certainly, you will start by opening the Facebook app first, then press the menu button represented by the three horizontal lines (☰) in the top right corner, or bottom in iPhones, and scroll down to the Settings & Privacy section, then press it and you will find below a set of sub-sections including Dark Mode, which has a “crescent moon” icon, so click on it as well.
In the Dark Mode section, you can activate the feature permanently by choosing the first setting “On” to immediately notice a shift in the appearance of the Facebook app to a gray color that reduces the intensity of the screen’s brightness but does not impact battery life as much as if it were completely black. Alternatively, you can also choose the last setting “System” which adapts the app’s appearance to changes you make in the phone’s settings, specifically the screen settings. For example, if you are using an iPhone with iOS 13 or higher, or an Android phone with Android 10 or higher, the dark mode in Facebook will be activated automatically once the dark mode in the phone’s screen settings is activated.
This is all about activating dark mode in the Facebook app on Android and iPhone. The steps are very simple, and if you don’t see the activation option, you have no choice but to wait, but not for long. But overall, the feature is very useful, at least in my opinion, as most of the apps I use daily offer dark mode, and when activated, going to the Facebook app increases the brightness significantly, which is very annoying.
