A well-known and popular Android app for downloading YouTube videos is confirmed to be on your phone – you must remove it immediately.
However, if you are part of a large group of Snaptube users, you must uninstall the app as soon as possible. As discovered by the security system Secure-D, Snaptube has been bombarding users with invisible ads for several months, thereby benefiting from unauthorized purchases.
Like the majority of apps of this kind, Snaptube is not available for download on Google Play. This is why the app has been able to spread among the devices of millions of users around the world, without anyone noticing the fraudulent advertising techniques used by the developer.
However, according to Secure-D, more than 70 million requests for suspicious transactions issued by Snaptube have been blocked in the past six months, all from a total of 4.4 million unique devices.
If not blocked, these requests would lead to unauthorized premium service purchases from users within the app, totaling $91 million in fees.
Furthermore, this research has also helped in finding evidence of similar tactics in the app Vidmate, developed by the same company behind Snaptube, known as Mobiuspace and based in China.
At the moment, the developer has not commented on the situation, and the app is still available for download through the most common alternatives to Google Play. As always, it is advised not to resort to these types of stores unless they have some form of verification system, and of course it is important to only download these apps from reputable developers.
