The Story of the Game Grand Theft Auto 1
The first game in the famous open-world game series known as Grand Theft Auto, also referred to as Grand Theft Auto 1 or GTA for distinction from individual titles in the series, was developed by DMA Design and published by MG Interactive on November 28, 1997 for PC and December 14, 1997 for PS1.
A Game Boy Color version was released by Tarantula Studios on November 22, 1999, and is also one of the 20 pre-loaded games on the PlayStation Classic platform released in December 2018.
Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 was created as an expansion to GTA 1, with Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 being an expansion to add London 1969, both requiring the original GTA disc to function.
The game is set in 1997 in three American cities: Liberty City (including the adjacent New Jersey state as part of the same map), San Andreas, and Vice City. The player chooses one character from a group of eight silent criminals, four males and four females, looking to make their way in the organized crime world of the city. The original heroes’ names are: Bubba, Kivlov, Travis, Troy, Divine, Katie, Mikki, and Ulrika.
The original Grand Theft Auto game consists of a series of levels, each set in one of the three cities in the game. In each level, the player has a target number of points to achieve, and five lives to achieve the score. The score counter also acts as a measure of money, which can be spent on paint jobs and other various things; however, any money spent is deducted from the score, making the goal a little further away.
The story revolves around a silent criminal hired by the Feretti crime family in Liberty City to assist in their various crimes, as a hired gangster and getaway driver for bank heists, and later aiding the takedown of the Sonetti crime family in New Jersey.
After attracting considerable attention from the police, the hero was booked to a trip to San Andreas, where he was hired by a Chinese crime syndicate led by Uncle Fu, helping them expand their criminal activities throughout the city. He was later introduced to Mexican gangster El Burro, assisting him and his gang in various criminal activities and eliminating suspected traitors in the gang.
Later, the hero decides to move to Vice City, where he is blackmailed by corrupt Vice Squad leader Samuel Deever to do his dirty work, claiming to have evidence of all the hero’s previous crimes that would put him in prison for life.
The hero is forced to help Deever initiate a war against the Brotherhood of Jah Army of Love group (also known as the Rastas), a Jamaican gang that has been carrying out terror campaigns in the city for over 7 years. The gang’s leader, Brother Marcus, eventually persuades him to join the Rastas by offering them a lot of protection against Deever and his crew.
After completing numerous tasks for Brother Marcus and helping his gang, Marcus contacts the hero one last time, asking to meet him to collect his retirement fee, signaling the end of the hero’s criminal career and the end of the events of the first game in the series path that would later become the most successful open-world game in terms of both critical and commercial success.
