How to Disable Preloading in “Edge” Browser During Windows 10 Startup for Speed Boost
Microsoft Edge is the new browser that comes shipped with various versions of Windows 10, yet most users have ignored it (what a surprise 🤣). Not many have tried it enough to use it as their default browser, as it lacks many essential features found in its competitors like Google Chrome, Firefox, and even Opera, which is considered much better than Edge. Most Windows 10 users change it as their default browser and rely on one of its competitors instead. However, not using this basic browser literally results in it being loaded automatically with every Windows 10 startup. I also don’t know the purpose and benefit of this loading since the system boot, except to slow down Windows startup. So, here’s how to disable the preloading of the “Edge” browser in Windows 10.
How to disable “Preloading” packages responsible for browser preloading
You can disable “Preloading Edge” package through the Windows 10 registry. Using the Windows registry might be a good idea, as it allows you to create a backup and restore it at any time, and it works on all Windows 10 versions. Open the Windows registry by pressing win + r then type “regedit” and navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main
Now right-click and choose New > then select “DWORD(32-bit) value” and give the name “AllowPrelaunch” to the new value. After creating the file, double-click on it and set the value to “0”. This process alone is not enough, as Edge also relies on some additional services that need to be disabled.
In the same Windows registry, now navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\TabPreloader
Also, right-click and choose New > then select “DWORD(32-bit) value” and give the name “AllowTabPreloading” to the new value. After creating the file, double-click on it and set the value to “0”. If you don’t find the values in the mentioned paths above, you can create them manually. If you are a user of the Edge browser, you won’t notice any significant impact on its performance; it might just take a bit longer to start for the first time, nothing more.

Just like we created the new values, you can create the missing values and name them. It’s worth mentioning that not having these values doesn’t mean that the preloading of the “Edge” browser won’t work; it still boots silently and automatically. By following this method, you can stop the preloading during system startup as an attempt to ease the boot process and speed up Windows to some extent. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, it is advisable to create a proper backup of your Windows registry in case something goes wrong; you can simply restore the backup and everything will return to its previous state 😉
