The Bloober Team showed great respect for the series and, in particular, the second part, Silent Hill 2. The emphasis was more on the story and reworking its narrative, always preserving its essence and fundamental elements, including the character of James Sunderland.
After building a strong backstory and addressing the psychological conflicts within, the protagonist, upon receiving a message from his deceased wife, embarks on a journey to the silent hill town to search for her. Before discovering the truth about this cursed town and facing his internal fears in a unique story that keeps you engaged in the events and eagerly awaiting the next chapters.
Not to mention encountering several characters, each with their own reasons and motivations for being in the town, where sadness, guilt, and regret intertwine from events in the past. All these elements were expertly handled by the development team in this project, creating a fantastic blend that keeps you engaged in the game from start to finish without any boredom or unnecessary elongation of events at all, making it one of the main strengths.
Regarding the gameplay aspect, although there were limitations in terms of game elements, the team dealt with what was available, especially since the original game was very limited in this aspect, relying on hitting and dodging using a wooden or iron stick, as well as weapons like the pistol and shotgun. The team seemed to have no desire to overcomplicate the gameplay further to avoid spoiling the experience, which will be detailed later.
On the other hand, the team focused on other elements worthy of recognition, such as puzzles and their completely changed composition. If you expect the same solutions and steps, I advise you to reconsider, as the elements have changed significantly for the better, with several fresh and highly innovative ideas that, while lengthening the gameplay, enhance the element of exploration, making it very enjoyable.
This harks back to the good old days when solutions were not provided, and you had to search for the answers yourself by exploring every corner of the interconnected game world. The map system was a unique idea and I consider it the best system for games of this kind, as it allows our protagonist, James, to document all observations during his risky journey, helping you explore every corner of the world.
We also cannot overlook the way the story choices interact, with consequences and impacts that make each ending different from one playthrough to the next. This gives you the opportunity to replay the game multiple times to explore all the endings and hidden dialogues. Now, let’s move on to the negative aspects, which could have been better.
One area that could have been improved is the character movement and animation, which makes the main character seem like a robot, moving without any interaction with the environment or objects, especially considering that the game is designed for the current generation and should have utilized this feature to give the character vitality and a complete gaming experience. Even in combat with monsters, the hit-and-dodge mechanism remains very primitive and does not live up to the standard expected for a game developed for current-gen consoles. While it can be understood that the team wanted to preserve the essence of the original game, the nature of a remake requires improvement in this aspect, in my opinion, which may differ from others.
Moving to one of the key aspects in any title, graphics and sound should be given significant attention in the review of the Silent Hill 2 Remake game. For the Silent Hill series, the atmosphere of fog in its world was initially used to block technical constraints and create psychological horror elements, including sounds.
However, the Remake version intelligently handled this aspect by the Bloober Team studio, where you can see distant areas of the city from above, but the fog and its technical structure make you anxious all the time, anticipating unpleasant surprises from the monsters lurking in the corners of the city. The technology of the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine made this approach fully realized.
As the fog feels alive in terms of continuous movement and density, coupled with the visual effects present in it, the game in terms of graphics quality represents a qualitative leap and I consider it one of the strong points. The level of detail and world-building, such as high-quality objects and their interactions, using elements derived from real images and realistically emphasizing their interaction with lighting, especially in areas dominated by darkness that evoke fear and tension as you explore them, were appropriately handled, thanks to the capabilities of the graphics engine.
This confirms that we are dealing with a product tailored for current-generation consoles despite the flaws we previously discussed regarding the physics of movement and the smoothness of gameplay. The Silent Hill 2 Remake offers choices to players in terms of graphics quality between performance that ensures a 60 frames per second experience, although it is not always stable, it still offers smooth gameplay even if it loses some details compared to the quality mode, which allows for a visually strong experience but limited to 30 frames per second.
However, in terms of lighting quality and environmental details, it shows a clear superiority on the PlayStation 5 console, where I experienced the game. You can note the differences between the two modes. Furthermore, character design should not be overlooked, as each character stands out with unique attributes and a strong narrative structure reflected in their high-quality design, and the cinematic cutscenes highlight this approach.
The level of detail in the animations is close to perfection and elevates the Remake version to the realm of great releases in recent years. It is a glimmer of hope for seeing other titles from the series benefiting from a remake version and is more abundant, by nature. On the audio front, the process is similar.
The Silent Hill series has historically excelled in sound effects, a feature that was maintained in this new release by the Bloober Team and the team responsible for designing the sound effects, who re-recorded and distributed a collection of tracks from the famous Japanese producer Akira Yamaoka, who delighted us with a set of fantastic musical tracks that made us pause several times to focus on their details and how they maintained their creative touch while improving them. to the best.
The same approach applies to the environmental effects and sounds that are almost inseparable from each area in the game world, creating a tense and fearful atmosphere due to the unpleasant surprise that may await you. The team handled this with absolute professionalism, especially when using high-quality headphones, as every scream or whisper is enough to make you tense, especially when hearing the steps of monsters in the dark.
